OPENING POSITION
July 1997
Have you stopped by the STOCKS & COMMODITIES Web site yet? Our address is https://www.traders.com. I ask because we've continued to add new features that should help you to better understand how to get the most out of our magazine, both past and present. For example, we recently posted our article abstracts, one-paragraph synopses of every article we've ever published. By reviewing the abstracts, you can locate which S&C volume has past articles on a particular technique, or any work by an author. There are a number of ways to access this information, but the simplest is to use our search engine, found in the Search section of our home page. Just click on Keyword search and then type in the keyword. For example, say you're interested in knowing more about the moving average convergence/divergence (MACD). Just type "MACD" in the query window, hit return, and a list of locations where Macd occurs will be displayed. One choice displayed will be Volume 12 1994 abstracts. Click there and you'll see a list of abstracts of the articles published in 1994. Now use your Find command, found under the Edit menu, and type in "MACD." You can quickly jump to each occurrence of the term Macd throughout the abstracts.

Another new feature comes about because, despite our best efforts, what with firm deadlines and schedules, errors can find their way into our publication. Thus, we've added an Errata page at our Web site, which will give us the chance to post a correction as soon as possible. Now you won't have to wait for the following issue to arrive to clear up a problem. This Errata page is located within our Frequently Asked Questions section, again found on our home page.

One final feature of our Web site I want to mention is our Software Survey page. As many of you know, each year we publish a Bonus Issue that's sent to all our paid subscribers. Within that issue we publish our software survey -- but due to space limitations, what you see on the printed page is a condensed version. If you check out our Web site, though, you'll see that we publish the full version of the software survey there. So if you're thinking about purchasing new software, this section is a handy place to start looking for details about the various trading- and technical analysis-related applications available today.

The STOCKS & COMMODITIES interview this month is with trader Larry Williams, one of the best-known individuals in the trading industry today. Williams has been in the business nearly 30 years now, so it goes without saying that he has certainly seen a great deal. You may be surprised to read that he is not as ardent a fan of technical analysis as you might expect; like a number of traders, he uses technical analysis as a timing tool, but within the context of the market environment. If nothing else, his comments once again indicate that there are as many ways to approach trading as there are traders.

In keeping with that thought, that's why we aways try to offer as much diversity on the subject of technical analysis as we can. We hope that with our help, you can find the ways that work for you.

Trade well!
