Satellite datafeed speeds data to PC

NEW -- Data Transmission Network Corporation (DTN) offers a new real-time quote and news service for personal computers called DTN Real-Time. Previously, all DTN services displayed information on a stand-alone unit, which could then pass the information to a PC. The new service delivers nearly 12,000 characters per second, which is roughly four times faster than a computer modem operating at 28.8 KBS, or the speed that a trader likely relies on to download data over the Internet.

DTN Real-Time is delivered via satellite and will soon be offered via cable television's vertical blanking interval technology. The dual-channel DTN Real-Time receiver grabs the information from the satellite signal and stores it on an internal hard drive to help ensure data redundancy.

The fee is $89 per month (under a prepaid annual contract) plus exchange fees. The subscriber receives all equipment and software necessary to use the service on his or her personal computer, which includes the receiver, satellite dish and software to connect to the subscriber's PC. DTN Real-Time offers a 30-day free trial. Subscribers pay a one-time initiation fee of $298.

New data mining algorithms enhance modeling software

NEW -- AbTech Corporation has added a new tool to its ModelQuest Expert data modeling software. The new addition, called StatNet Expert, is a data mining tool that gives ModelQuest additional modeling criteria such as block cross-validation and Akaike criteria, a user-modifiable network-search algorithm and user-definable polynomial node types.

StatNet Expert uses neural network technology and statistical techniques to capture relationships in data. Its mathematical functions subdivide problems into manageable pieces, or nodes, and automatically apply advanced regression techniques to solve each problem. ModelQuest is $695.

Software counts Elliott waves

NEW -- Elliott Wave International has released software that discerns wave patterns in markets and forecasts prices. The program, called WinWaves, uses an engine to find structures in market price movements and to count waves. The software ranks patterns according to wave count in order of probability. Then the program lists a price range within which the patterns may peak or bottom.

The software labels the charts it produces with Elliott wave counts following a strict guideline for identifying Elliott waves. It also reports when a wave isn't present. It includes explanations of patterns, confidence ratings and backtesting. It forecasts long-, intermediate- and short-term price movement. A free program demo is available by mail or via the Internet.

Swing system is third-party add-on to charting programs

NEW -- MX Capital Trading has released SwingTrader, a swing trading system add-on for Omega Research's TradeStation and SuperCharts.

The trading system uses the trader's charting software to scan securities data for special price patterns that occur at or near the turning point of short- to intermediate-term market swings. These SwingTrader patterns are further filtered to ensure that long and short positions are on the right side of major market trends.

The introductory price is $567. For a limited time, a bonus trend indicator is included.

Charting software offers Elliott wave analysis

UPGRADE -- Prognosis Software Development has released an enhanced version of its Windows-based charting software ELWAVE, which provides support for Elliott wave theory. Once the user has labeled a chart in ELWAVE, it performs analyses such as calculating Fibonacci targets and ratios. Other Elliott tools such as channels, logarithmic spirals and the Elliott oscillator are also supported.

Version 2.0 analyzes wave counts that the user has defined. It recognizes patterns and gives feedback on the validity of wave counts. The wave tree feature gives a visual depiction of wave degrees. Clicking on a wave label in the wave tree will zoom in on the appropriate section in the chart, show the connected Fibonacci ratios, and reveal which rules have been satisfied or broken. In addition, ELWAVE graphically presents alternative paths of future price action for each pattern phase.

ELWAVE comes in two versions, end-of-day and intraday. ELWAVE is an object-oriented program with 32-bit design and reads the MetaStock file format. Prognosis' next release of ELWAVE will perform Elliott wave analysis automatically.
