UPGRADE -- Essex Trading has released version 4.0 of its options-trading program, Option Pro. The new version features automatic buy/sell signals for equity and futures options; a new probability calculator; and quicker, easier downloads.

Version 4.0 expands the trading signal generation capabilities of version 3.0 and now generates specific buy and sell trading signals for stocks and/or futures options using strategies for buying calls or puts, straddles, covered calls, and bear call/bull put spreads.

The new strategies were developed by Jay Kaeppel, director of research at Essex Trading and author of several books.

Version 4.0 also includes a new probability calculator for helping to determine the probability of a target price being reached and the odds of success for common option trading strategies. Advanced traders can use it to select the best strangles to sell based on the probability of profit and standard deviations.

Other new features include 32-bit technology, Y2K compliance, expanded use of bid-and-ask quotes, standard deviation analysis, futures pricing tables, and a stock database utility.

The end-of-day version is $995; the real-time version is $1,495. A free trial version is available for $25 s&h.

NEW SOCIAL SECURITY STATEMENTS

The Social Security Administration will launch the largest customized mailing ever undertaken by a federal agency when it sends an annual Social Security Statement to 125 million workers.

The four-page statement is designed to help workers with financial planning by providing estimates of their retirement, disability, and survivors' benefits. The statement will also provide workers with an easy way to determine whether their earnings are accurately posted on their Social Security records. This is an important feature because Social Security benefits are based on an individual's career wage records.

The annual Social Security Statement is the result of efforts by Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan to establish in law the requirement that all Americans receive an annual statement of potential Social Security benefits. By law, SSA will send the annual statements to workers who are ages 25 and older and not receiving Social Security benefits. SSA will stagger the mailing of the statements throughout the year, with approximately 500,000 statements delivered each day. Workers will automatically receive their statements about three months before their birth month.

Social Security benefits are based on how much you've earned; pay benefits if you become disabled, and pay benefits to dependents of workers who die. Social Security was designed to provide only part of a person's total retirement income.
