OPENING POSITION

October 2012

Celebrating 30 years…

When we cross those particular decade milestones, it calls for a special celebration. Along those lines, we at Stocks & Commodities magazine would like to celebrate our 30th year in publishing by presenting you, our readers, with this special anniversary issue.

In the last 30 years, we have seen different types of markets, catalyzed by crowd behavior that reacts differently to different circumstances, whether economic conditions, political turmoil, scandals, hype, or anything else that affects the markets. We have also seen notable changes in technology, which if nothing else has given more people access to the markets. Through all these changes, our focus at S&C has always been to educate our readers about technical analysis as well as bring them new techniques so that they can adapt to the changing market conditions.

As part of our celebration, we would like to share with our readers the article “A 30-Year Lookback” starting here, which highlights some of the changes that have taken place in the financial markets.

Things are certainly different now than they were 30 years ago. Taking a walk down memory lane makes you appreciate the humble beginnings of the subject of technical analysis. It is interesting to see how far the industry has come, yet it is still a long way from gaining the respect it deserves.

Those who have stood their ground in spite of the lack of respect they have received from the financial community have earned their status in the industry. We were fortunate to have interviewed veteran trader Marc Chaikin in this issue. Many of you will be familiar with the name, given the indicators he has developed such as the Chaikin oscillator and the Chaikin money flow. But more important, he has seen the changes in the industry since 1982 and shares them with us in the interview, which starts here.

It is our intent, in this issue as well as those that will follow, to continue to be a vehicle for bringing you trading ideas and strategies that can help you become a better trader regardless of how the market is behaving. Thank you for staying with us and we hope that you will continue to do so for the next three decades!
